historical interpretation
Reading the past
Historical interpretation is the process of analyzing and explaining past events, assigning meaning and significance based on available evidence.
Different historians may offer competing interpretations of the same events, shaped by their perspectives, methods, and the questions they ask: Marxist interpretations emphasize economic forces; feminist interpretations center women's experiences.
The term acknowledges that history isn't simply "what happened" but how we understand and construct narratives about what happened.
