wagon master
Pioneer convoy captain
A wagon master is the person in charge of a wagon train, responsible for organizing the journey, maintaining discipline, and making decisions about routes, rest stops, and river crossings.
The term belongs mainly to the 19th-century American West, when settlers traveled overland in groups of covered wagons: The wagon master decided they'd camp by the creek.
