devulcanization

Undoing rubber hardening

Devulcanization is the process of reversing vulcanization—breaking down the chemical bonds that make rubber hard and durable, returning it to a softer, more pliable state.

The process allows recycled rubber to be reprocessed and reused: Devulcanization could make tire recycling economically viable.

The technology remains challenging because vulcanization creates strong sulfur crosslinks that resist reversal.
