vulcanisation

Sulfur-treated rubber process

Vulcanisation is a chemical process that hardens rubber by treating it with sulphur or other agents under heat, making it more durable and elastic.

Before vulcanisation, raw rubber becomes sticky in heat and brittle in cold.

The process transformed rubber into a practical industrial material: vulcanised tyres, vulcanised seals.

Also spelled vulcanization.
