volcanic lightning
Ash cloud electricity
Volcanic lightning is the electrical discharge that occurs within volcanic eruption clouds.
Ash particles, rock fragments, and ice collide violently as they're ejected, generating static electricity that produces dramatic lightning bolts within or around the volcanic plume.
The phenomenon creates spectacular images of eruptions laced with branching electrical flashes.
