video audition
Filmed casting submission
A video audition is a recorded performance submitted for consideration in place of an in-person tryout.
Actors, musicians, and performers film themselves and send the recording to casting directors or producers: She submitted a video audition for the role since she couldn't fly to LA.
The format became standard practice during the COVID-19 pandemic and remains common for initial screening rounds.
