verbiage

Too many words

Verbiage is an excess of words—language that uses more words than necessary to convey meaning.

The term is usually critical: The contract was buried in legal verbiage.

Some use it more neutrally to mean simply the words used: We need to finalize the verbiage for the press release.

This looser sense bothers purists who insist verbiage implies wordiness.
