ventriloquism
Voice-throwing performance art
Ventriloquism is the art of speaking without moving the lips, creating the illusion that the voice comes from elsewhere—typically a puppet or dummy.
The performer, a ventriloquist, manipulates a figure while projecting dialogue onto it: The ventriloquist made the dummy seem to interrupt him.
The word comes from Latin roots meaning "belly-speaking," reflecting old beliefs about the voice's source.
