variety stores

Cheap goods retailers

Variety stores are retail shops selling a wide assortment of inexpensive merchandise—household items, toys, candy, stationery, and other small goods.

The term dates from an era when stores like Woolworth's and Kresge's offered diverse products at low fixed prices, often five or ten cents, earning them the nickname five-and-dime.

The format has largely given way to dollar stores and discount chains.
