up-or-out

Promote or terminate

Up-or-out describes a system where employees must advance within a set period or leave the organization.

Common in law firms, consulting, the military, and academia: The firm's up-or-out policy meant associates had seven years to make partner.

The approach creates competitive pressure and clears room for new talent, but can force out capable people who simply aren't promotable.
