tenure-track

Professor's proving period

Tenure-track describes academic positions that can lead to tenure—permanent employment with strong job protections.

A tenure-track professor typically has six or seven years to demonstrate research and teaching excellence before being evaluated for tenure.

The term distinguishes these positions from adjunct or visiting appointments, which offer no path to permanent status: She landed a tenure-track job at a research university.
