ungrafted

Growing from seed

Ungrafted describes a plant, especially a vine or fruit tree, growing on its own roots rather than being joined to different rootstock.

Most commercial grapevines and fruit trees are grafted onto hardy rootstock for disease resistance or vigor, so ungrafted specimens are notable exceptions: ungrafted vines from pre-phylloxera vineyards, ungrafted heirloom apple trees.
