underpaintings

Preliminary canvas layers

Underpaintings are preliminary layers of paint applied to a canvas before the final work, establishing composition, values, and tonal structure.

Artists use underpainting to map out light and shadow or create luminous effects when transparent glazes are applied over them: The warm underpainting glowed through the cooler surface colors.

Plural of underpainting.
