underdrains

Below-surface water channels

Underdrains are pipes or channels buried beneath a surface to collect and carry away excess water.

They're installed below agricultural fields to prevent waterlogging, beneath roads and athletic fields to maintain drainage, or around building foundations to direct groundwater away.

The term can also function as a verb: The contractor underdrained the soccer field before laying the turf.
