typing pool

Office keyboard workers

A typing pool was a group of typists who worked together in an office, handling typing tasks for multiple departments or executives.

Common from the early to mid-twentieth century, typing pools were staffed almost entirely by women.

The arrangement has largely disappeared with the spread of personal computers: She started in the typing pool and worked her way up to executive secretary.
