tutela

Roman protective authority

Tutela is a Spanish and Italian legal term for guardianship or protection, particularly the care of minors or those unable to manage their own affairs.

In Roman law, tutela was the authority exercised over those not legally autonomous—children, women, or the mentally incapacitated.

The word persists in modern civil law systems descended from Roman tradition: The court granted tutela to the grandmother.

In Catholic contexts, tutela may refer to the patronage or protection of a saint over a place or institution.
