trunkline
Primary communication channel
A trunkline is a main route or channel in a system—typically referring to railroads, telephone networks, or pipelines.
In telecommunications, a trunkline connects switchboards or exchanges, carrying traffic between nodes rather than serving individual endpoints.
In transportation, it's the principal line from which branch lines diverge: The trunkline ran from Chicago to St. Louis.
