true leaf
Post-cotyledon foliage structure
A true leaf is a leaf that develops after a seedling's initial leaves, called cotyledons.
Cotyledons emerge from the seed and provide early nutrition, but true leaves grow from the plant's stem and perform full photosynthesis.
Gardeners watch for true leaves as a sign the seedling is established: Wait until the tomatoes have their first true leaves before transplanting.
