stipule
Leafstalk's small outgrowth
A stipule is a small, leaf-like appendage at the base of a leaf stalk where it joins the stem.
Stipules occur in pairs, one on each side of the stalk, and vary widely in form—some are tiny and fall off early, others are prominent and persistent.
In peas and roses, stipules are conspicuous; in many plants, they're barely noticeable or absent entirely.
