trucker's hitch

Tensioning knot system

A trucker's hitch is a knot system that creates a mechanical advantage for tightening rope, used to secure loads on trucks, trailers, and roof racks.

The knot forms a pulley-like loop that lets you pull the rope much tighter than hand tension alone would allow: I threw a trucker's hitch over the kayak to cinch it down.

Despite the name, it's useful for anyone tying down cargo.
