trioxide

Triple oxygen compound

A trioxide is a chemical compound containing three oxygen atoms bonded to another element.

The term appears most often in chemistry: sulfur trioxide, nitrogen trioxide, arsenic trioxide.

The prefix tri- distinguishes these from compounds with different oxygen counts—monoxide (one) or dioxide (two).
