tributary states
Dependent political entities
Tributary states are nations or territories that maintain nominal independence while paying tribute—money, goods, or military support—to a more powerful state in exchange for protection or the right to exist.
The arrangement acknowledges subordination without full annexation: China's neighboring kingdoms often functioned as tributary states, sending annual gifts to the emperor.
The term appears in historical discussions of empires and their satellite regions.
