tree line
Alpine vegetation boundary
The tree line is the elevation or latitude beyond which trees cannot grow, marking the boundary between forested and treeless terrain.
On mountains, it's the altitude where forest gives way to alpine meadow or bare rock: We hiked above the tree line.
In polar regions, it marks the edge of the subarctic forest before tundra begins.
