traumatic amnesia

Memory loss, trauma-caused

Traumatic amnesia is memory loss caused by a physical injury to the head or by psychological shock.

In the physical sense, a blow to the head may erase memories of events just before or after the injury: He had no memory of the crash itself.

In the psychological sense, the mind may block out memories of severely distressing experiences—abuse, combat, disasters—as a protective mechanism.

The memories may return gradually or remain inaccessible.
