Korsakoff syndrome

Alcohol-induced forgetting

Korsakoff syndrome is a chronic memory disorder caused by severe thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency, most commonly resulting from long-term alcohol abuse.

The condition produces severe amnesia—patients cannot form new memories and often cannot recall recent events, though older memories may remain intact.

A hallmark is confabulation: patients unknowingly fill memory gaps with fabricated information.

After years of heavy drinking, he developed Korsakoff syndrome and could no longer remember conversations from minutes before.
