torture rack
Limb-lengthening punishment device
A torture rack is a medieval device for extracting confessions through pain, consisting of a frame where the victim's wrists and ankles were bound to rollers that could be turned to stretch the body, dislocating joints.
The term extends to any apparatus that painfully stretches or strains: That physical therapy machine felt like a torture rack.
Figuratively, being on the rack means suffering intense pressure or anxiety.
