topsider

Sailor's canvas footwear

Topsider is a brand name for a deck shoe with a non-slip rubber sole, designed originally for boating.

The term has become generic for any similar leather boat shoe with rawhide laces and siped soles: He wore khakis and topsiders to the yacht club.

By extension, a topsider can mean someone from upper social classes—the kind of person who wears such shoes.
