bilge rat

Nautical insult term

A bilge rat is a rat living in a ship's bilge—the lowest, foulest part of the hull where stagnant water collects.

The term became nautical slang for the lowest-ranking sailors who worked in miserable conditions below deck.

As an insult, it calls someone dirty, contemptible, or untrustworthy: You bilge rat, you sold us out.
