toddler swim

Toddler swim is a style of swimming—or attempted swimming—characteristic of very young children: arms flailing, head barely above water, legs kicking erratically.

The phrase often describes anyone thrashing through water without proper technique: I never learned to swim properly, so I just toddler swim across the pool.

It can extend metaphorically to any clumsy but determined effort to stay afloat.
