tide marks
Ocean's daily signatures
Tide marks are the lines left on a surface after water recedes, showing the high point that liquid reached.
On beaches, they appear as bands of seaweed and debris marking high tide.
The term extends to any residual stain showing former water levels: tide marks in the bathtub, tide marks on the glass.
British English uses the term for rings of dirt left on unwashed skin.
