permanent waves
Chemically set curls
Permanent waves, usually shortened to perms, are hairstyles created by chemically treating hair to hold curls or waves that last for months rather than washing out.
The process uses chemicals to break and reform the hair's bonds while it's wrapped around rods: She got a permanent wave before the wedding.
The term dates from when such treatments were novel—now simply called perms.
