terrain map
Ground elevation diagram
A terrain map represents the physical features of a land area—mountains, valleys, rivers, and elevation changes.
Unlike political maps showing borders or road maps showing routes, terrain maps emphasize topography: The hikers studied the terrain map before attempting the ridge.
They use shading, contour lines, or color gradients to show how the land rises and falls.
