tailgater

Dangerous close follower

A tailgater is someone who follows another vehicle too closely, leaving insufficient stopping distance.

The term comes from tailgate, the hinged rear door of a truck or SUV.

A tailgater may also be someone who participates in a tailgate party—socializing around open vehicle tailgates before sporting events: The tailgaters had their grills going hours before kickoff.
