tailgate parties
Pre-game lot festivities
Tailgate parties are social gatherings held in parking lots before sporting events, concerts, or other large venues, where people eat, drink, and socialize around the open tailgates of their vehicles.
The tradition is especially associated with American football: We got to the stadium four hours early for the tailgate party.
Food is typically grilled on portable barbecues, and the atmosphere is festive and informal.
