Timed lap event
A swimming race is a competitive event in which swimmers race against each other over a set distance in a pool or open water.
Races are typically categorized by stroke—freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly—and by distance: She won the 100-meter freestyle.
The term also applies informally to any impromptu competition: The kids had a swimming race across the lake.
