surgeon's knot

Double-throw surgical tie

A surgeon's knot is a modified square knot with an extra turn on the first throw, creating more friction to hold tension while the second throw is tied.

Surgeons use it to secure sutures under tension—the doubled first wrap prevents slippage before the knot is completed.

The knot also appears in fly fishing and macramé.
