silent service
Stealthy naval branch
Silent service is a nickname for submarine forces, particularly the U.S.
Navy's submarine fleet.
The name reflects both the secrecy surrounding submarine operations and the need for submarines to operate undetected: He served twenty years in the silent service.
The term occasionally extends to other branches known for discretion, such as intelligence agencies.
