superheavy element

Lab-made atomic giant

A superheavy element is one with an atomic number greater than 103, beyond the actinide series on the periodic table.

These elements are synthetic—created in particle accelerators by smashing lighter atoms together—and typically exist for only fractions of a second before decaying.

Scientists pursue them partly to test theories about a predicted "island of stability" where some superheavy nuclei might persist longer.

Oganesson is the heaviest superheavy element yet synthesized.
