flerovium

Superheavy synthetic atom

Flerovium is a synthetic chemical element with atomic number 114, created in particle accelerators by bombarding plutonium with calcium ions.

Named after the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions in Russia, it exists only fleetingly—its most stable isotope decays in under three seconds.

Like other superheavy elements, flerovium has no practical applications and is studied purely to understand atomic structure at the extreme end of the periodic table.
