rutherfordium

Synthetic transactinide metal

Rutherfordium is a synthetic radioactive element, atomic number 104, produced in particle accelerators by bombarding heavy elements.

Named after physicist Ernest Rutherford, it belongs to the transactinide series and exists only fleetingly in laboratory conditions.

Like other superheavy elements, it has no practical applications outside nuclear research.
