superfamily
Above family, below
A superfamily is a taxonomic category ranking above family, grouping related families that share a common evolutionary ancestor.
In biology, the suffix -oidea marks animal superfamilies: Hominoidea includes both great apes and humans.
The term extends to any large grouping of related elements: a superfamily of programming languages, a superfamily of proteins.
