subway system
Urban rail network
A subway system is a network of underground trains serving a city or metropolitan area.
The term covers the infrastructure—tunnels, stations, tracks, and trains—as well as the organization operating it.
Major cities worldwide have subway systems: New York's subway system runs 24 hours.
Some systems extend above ground in places, but the underground portions define them.
