subterraneous
Beneath the surface
Subterraneous means underground or beneath the earth's surface—a more elaborate variant of subterranean.
Both words describe things existing or occurring below ground: subterraneous caverns, subterraneous rivers.
The word is rare and literary, with subterranean strongly preferred in modern usage.
