striking out

Crossing something out

Striking out means failing completely, especially in an attempt to achieve something.

The phrase comes from baseball, where a batter strikes out after three missed swings, ending their turn at bat.

Beyond sports, it describes any decisive failure: I struck out trying to get her number.

Striking out can also mean setting forth boldly: She struck out on her own after college.
