shot down

Nixed without ceremony

Shot down describes something rejected, defeated, or destroyed.

An aircraft that is shot down is brought to the ground by enemy fire.

When applied to ideas, proposals, or arguments, shot down means dismissed or refuted: I pitched the idea to my boss but she shot it down immediately.

A person who is shot down may have been rejected romantically or had their hopes crushed: He asked her out and got shot down hard.
