steering lock

Anti-theft wheel restraint

Steering lock refers to two related automotive features.

The first is an anti-theft mechanism that locks a vehicle's steering wheel in place when the ignition is off, preventing the car from being steered if hotwired: The steering lock engaged when I removed the key.

The second meaning is the maximum angle a vehicle's front wheels can turn, determining its turning radius: This truck has a poor steering lock for tight spaces.
