transponder key
Chip-embedded car key
A transponder key is a car key containing a microchip that communicates with the vehicle's ignition system.
When inserted, the key transmits a coded signal; if the code matches what the car expects, the engine starts.
This anti-theft technology means simply cutting a physical duplicate won't work—the chip must also be programmed: The dealership charged two hundred dollars to replace my transponder key.
