steeplechases
Obstacle course races
Steeplechases are horse races run over a course with obstacles—fences, hedges, ditches, and water jumps.
The name comes from early races where riders navigated cross-country toward a distant church steeple.
The term also applies to foot races with hurdles and water obstacles: She competed in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
Figuratively, any course full of obstacles might be called a steeplechase.
