finishing line

Where winners cross

The finishing line is the marked boundary that competitors cross to complete a race.

It determines the winner and records official times.

The term is interchangeable with finish line, though finishing line is more common in British English: She collapsed just past the finishing line.

Figuratively, any endpoint of a prolonged effort: After years of research, the finishing line is finally in sight.
