standard spelling
Conventional letter arrangement
Standard spelling is the widely accepted way to write a word in a given language or region.
English has standard spellings for most words, though some vary between British and American conventions: colour/color, travelled/traveled.
Before dictionaries standardized spelling in the 18th century, writers spelled words however they pleased.
